I have celiac disease which means that I eat a gluten free (GF) diet. I have a gluten intolerance and can’t eat anything with wheat, rye or barley in it. No normal bread, beer, pasta, pizza – you get the idea. I was diagnosed 10 years ago after years of trying to figure out why I was sick so much, losing my hair and so fatigued. It was such a relief to finally have a diagnosis and know that my only change would have to be dietary! There are so many gluten free products available now which makes gluten free eating easier and better.
When people find out that I’m gluten intolerant, two questions always come up: 1) what were your symptoms and how were you diagnosed? 2) what products are the best? Eating GF can often be expensive so it’s really disheartening when you spend $6 on a new product that looks great and then you get home and it tastes like cardboard. So, I wanted to share a few of my favorite GF products today.
Best bread: Udi’s Whole Grain Bread or White Sandwich Bread
Best Buns: Udi’s Hamburger Buns (I do not really care for their hot dog buns)
Best Pancake/Waffle Mix: Pamela’s Baking and Pancake Mix
Best Crackers: Blue Diamond’s Almond (or any variety) Nut-Thins
Best Pasta: Tinkyada or Trader Joes
Best Cookies (for infants/toddlers – or my brother who is 41 and doesn’t have to eat GF!): Mi-Del Arrowroot Cookies
Best Cereal: General Mills’ Chex varieties (all but wheat Chex) and Nature’s Path Mesa Sunrise
Best Frozen Pizza: Gourmet Parlor Pizza (this is made in MN!)
Best Pretzels: Glutino
Other good companies: Kinnikinnick makes excellent products – they have great “oreo” type cookies and their breads and bagels are also good. They make great rice wraps for sandwiches. Grandma Ferdon’s is a company from Hayward, WI that makes great pie crusts, cinnamon rolls and other goodies like donut holes. They will deliver these frozen goodies to your door. Another great company is Bittersweet Bakery in Eagan, MN – all of their products are AMAZING and you wouldn’t know they were gluten free. They have great cookies, muffins, cakes – YUM! I am not sure if they ship their products.
I could create an entire blog on each of these products and companies, but at least this is a good starting point for someone newly diagnosed with celiac or someone you may know that is gluten free and want to have some products on hand for them. More and more great products are coming on the market all the time and in Minnesota, we have great local companies like General Mills, Bittersweet and Gourmet Parlor that are making these products. You can find most of these products in the natural or organic section of your local grocery store or try a natural food store or c0-op.
Happy Gluten Free Eating!!
