Happy 4th of July everyone!  It’s a time to celebrate our nation’s birthday and the freedms that we enjoy as Americans.  What will you do to celebrate?  Will you watch some fireworks or maybe shoot some off yourselves?

I’m working today but only for part of the day and we’re having a potluck at work to celebrate the 4th.  It will likely be a quiet, quick day at work and then we can get back home to our families.  It’s supposed to be over 100 degrees in Minneapolis today so if we do something as a family, it will most likely involve water or something indoors.  Us northerners aren’t used to this hot, hot weather!

I remember as a kid always watching the fireworks for the 4th of July – either with family or friends.  There are countless celebrations I remember visiting relatives in South Dakota and shooting off fireworks at my grandparents’ with aunts, uncles and cousins.  It usually took HOURS and was a slow process but we loved it!  At the time, you couldn’t buy any fireworks in Minnesota so we thought South Dakota was extra special for allowing this “dangerous” fun.  Because it usually took hours, our family would often be distracted and start singing Christmas carols or doing a music train or something to keep us occupied.  There are only so many sparklers you can light over 2 or 3 hours!

However you celebrate, have a terrific 4th of July!  Enjoy your family, friends and being together on a hot summer day.
