The Great Minnesota Get Together opens tomorrow, Thursday, August 23, 2012! For those of you not familiar with that term, the more common title is the Minnesota State Fair. We are planning to go to the Fair next week on Tuesday. It’s Military Appreciation Day and we were able to get free tickets. There is supposed to be a parade and other special events for military service members and veterans. Tickets are also discounted ($7 instead of $12) for any service member or veteran that day (bring your military ID or DD214).
Since moving to Minneapolis five years ago, this will be the third year I’ve gone to the Minnesota State Fair. Before that I hadn’t gone for about 16 years. There are so many great things to do and see at the Fair that there is definitely something for everyone. I personally love the french fry stand where all they sell are french fries – they are hot and salty. People come just for the food. Who doesn’t want to know what new item is on a stick this year? The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) building with fish and other wildlife is always a hit. Despite Brian having grown up on a farm, we always end up spending a lot of time in the livestock buildings. Of course, the animals do look beautiful all gussied up for the Fair!
The Miracle of Birth Center where pregnant livestock are on display while giving birth is always packed. But don’t worry, if you don’t get a front row seat to see Miss Piggy giving birth to her eight offspring, you can watch it on one of the many large screen TVs in the building. Oh, and hear the live commentary as she pops out number seven! I’m glad nobody does that for us! Don’t plan on coming to my labor and delivery room in December for live action and play-by-play!
We’ve told Finn that we’re going to the Fair next week and he is excited. We took him to the Douglas County Fair in Alexandria, Minnesota last weekend! It was a BIG hit! Of course, anything with Grandma and Grandpa is usually a big deal, but this was extra special. He rode the kiddie rides on Midway (he called them the “fun things”) and checked out the displays and booths along the fair. It was really fun to see his excitement and share it with my parents. I think the Minnesota State Fair will be a blast!
